Second Annual MPF Oktoberfest - October 21, 2017

Posted on September 14th, 2017 by Brad Miller

Join us at the Second Annual MPF Oktoberfest event being held this year at Kitzingen Brewery in Wyoming from 5-8 p.m! (click here to register) Inspired by the small town Kitzingen in Germany where the Brewery's owner served on a U.S. military base, the interior of the brewery is designed to tell his story and "pay homage to the relationship between the American soldiers and the German people at the base."

In addition to beverages of your choice (non-alcoholic beverages will be available), registration will include delicious pretzel bites & cheese and deep fried mushrooms for appetizers with your choice of one of the following dinner options:

  • Jaegerschnitzel – Tender pork cutlet prepared old world Bavarian style, pan-fried and smothered with a mushroom cream gravy, served with our specialty spatzle, red cabbage and a side of cucumber salad.
  • Wienerschnitzel – Tender pork loin freshly breaded with our own signature breading and fried to a golden brown, served with spatzle, red cabbage and a side of cucumber salad.
  • Our Wurst Plate – Our sausage platter including Bockwurst, Currywurst and Weisswurst on a bed of sauerkraut, served with a pretzel and cucumber salad.

The meal will be topped off with delicious, homemade Black Forest Cake! So get your German on! Come and experience the brewery’s unique charm, as well as a variety of authentic German food and craft beer on tap. Everyone is welcome to attend – be sure to invite your family and friends for an evening of fun and fellowship, all while supporting a worthy cause!

Please note that $75 of your contribution to attend this event is tax-deductible within the limits of IRS rules (Tax ID #38-3122918). Proceeds from the event will go toward supporting the Foundation’s investments in the future of pharmacy.

President's Corner - September 2017

Posted on August 23rd, 2017 by Katie Axford

For many of us, preparing for back-to-school signals the end of summer…but it also means it is time to start another year of great programming for WMSHP!  The Board met in June to plan activities for the year ahead, and we are excited to start broadening services and opportunities for our membership.  Stay tuned for more updates in the coming months.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the ballgame with us on July 13th for the annual summer outing at Fifth Third Ballpark. The weather was beautiful, the Whitecaps won, and the all-you-can-eat BBQ was a home run!

We look forward to seeing many of you Thursday, September 14th for our first CE event of the 2017-2018 year at Uccello's in Grand Rapids.  We’ll be talking about “The ABCs of CPD” and how embracing a continuous professional development process can help maximize lifelong learning.  One hour of live CE credit will be offered for pharmacists and technicians.

Please consider encouraging any pharmacists and technicians you know who are not WMSHP members to consider joining. The annual membership fee ($40 for pharmacists, $30 for technicians) gives members access to up to 7 hours of live CE credits from our regular monthly meetings September through November and January through April. With an additional registration fee, our annual Spring Seminar in May provides another 5 hours. Membership applications or renewals are available at www.wmshp.net/renew.

If you would like more information about WMSHP, please visit our website at www.wmshp.net.  If you’re looking to get more involved in our organization, please contact any Board member to discuss opportunities.

President's Corner - April 2017

At our March meeting, Zachary Smith, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP, shared valuable insights during his presentation entitled “Review of the 2016 HAP/VAP Guidelines: Focus on Application at the Patient and Health-System Level” at Bronson.  Zach is a critical care pharmacist with Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, and we appreciate him driving all the way across the state to help us dig into these guidelines in a practical way.

Join us on April 13th at Gravity Taphouse Grille in Grand Rapids as Ben Kulwicki (Mercy Health Saint Mary’s) and Katie Guido (Borgess Medical Center) present results of the research projects they have been working on during this residency year.  Both projects explore the impact pharmacists can have on optimizing patient care…a topic important to all of us!

WMSHP is still accepting scholarship applications from eligible P3 students.  For the second year, the Board voted to offer one $1000 scholarship and one $500 scholarship to deserving students who are native or current residents of West Michigan.  The application deadline is April 7th, and winners will be announced at the annual WMSHP Spring Seminar.  More information is available at www.wmshp.net/scholarship.

The 2017 WMSHP Spring Seminar will be held on Tuesday, May 9th at the Prince Conference Center in Grand Rapids.  We will be offing 5 hours of live continuing education accredited for pharmacists and technicians, including 1 hour of pain and 1 hour of law.  Visit www.wmshp.net/seminar for more information and to register for the event.  We hope to see you there!

As always, if you would like more information about WMSHP, please visit our website at www.wmshp.net.

President's Corner - March 2017

Posted on February 22nd, 2017 by Katie Axford

I hope you were able to get out this weekend and enjoy the beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures…perhaps a sign that spring is just around the corner?!

Members who joined us at Saint Mary’s last week were treated to an engaging presentation entitled “Mechanical Circulatory Support: Sounds Highly Non-Pharmacologic to Me” from CJ Michaud, PharmD, BCPS, cardiothoracic critical care pharmacist at Spectrum Health – Butterworth.  Many thanks to CJ for sharing his knowledge and passion for a topic that is unfamiliar (and a little bit uncomfortable) to many of us!

Congratulations to Katie Guido (Borgess Medical Center) and Ben Kulwicki (Mercy Health Saint Mary’s) for being selected to present at our April meeting.  We look forward to hearing about the research projects they have been working on this year.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 9th at Bronson in Kalamazoo and will feature a presentation from Zach Smith, PharmD, BCPS, BCCCP on the 2016 IDSA guidelines for hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia.

MPF Adopt-a-Student:  If you are headed to the MPA Annual Convention this weekend (February 24-26), please consider sponsoring a student to attend the awards banquet through the Michigan Pharmacy Foundation’s Adopt-a-Student program.  If you are not going to the meeting, you can still sponsor a student and MPF will see to it that the student is paired with another pharmacy professional during the event.  The cost for the program is $100 for one student or $185 for two students.  Please email Eric Roath (eric@michiganpharmacists.org) if you are interested in supporting the next generation of pharmacists in this way!
